Lourie Center Midlands Lifelong Learning Spring 2019 Classes

The Lourie Center, in keeping with its mission to provide opportunities for older adults to stay physically and intellectually fit, now offers continuing education for seniors. The Midlands Lifelong Learning Program is a community education program of academically stimulating courses for adults 50 years of age and older. Academics and professionals from the community will teach a range of topics from within the arts and sciences.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-1:50 pm

This course explores how drugs work and why they work differently in different people. Drugs used widely to relieve pain, including benefits and the misery they may cause in our society.

Nuclear Energy: Costs, Benefits, and Environmental Hazards            

Mondays and Wednesdays, 2- 2:50 pm

March 18, 20, 25, and 27

A mini-course on the history of nuclear energy, and its costs, benefits, and future. To some, nuclear energy offers a clean energy alternative.  To others, it summons images of disaster. What happens inside a nuclear power plant to bring such marvel and misery into being? Environmental impacts of atomic bomb testing and nuclear accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima will also be discussed.
