Sustainable Midlands is a local, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to addressing both the economic needs and environmental well being in the communities that make up the Midlands. Sustainable Midlands works hard to achieve these goals by advocating for sustainable solutions to issues in the area, providing resources and facilitating communication among citizens and community leaders. They also love to celebrate their work and their collaborators!
Their annual Wine for Water event is in honor of the vision they have for the preservation of our local waterways. Sustainable Midlands, along with the Rocky Branch, Smith Branch and Gills Creek Watershed associations are dedicated to the restoration of area streams, lakes, rivers and land. The Rocky Branch Watershed Alliance works to develop cost effective solutions in cases of flooding, improve water quality in streams and the Congaree River, restore habitats for native plants and wildlife, and wants to plan a greenway from Five Points to the Granby Riverwalk. The Smith Branch Watershed Alliance addresses issues facing the Smith Branch waterways in the northern part of Columbia such as improving and protecting water quality and reducing flooding. The Gills Creek Watershed Association is dedicated to restoring the watershed through education, grassroots action, public and private partnerships, projects, and controlled development, in an effort to make the watershed a resource for recreation, habitat for native wildlife and plants, and a national model for watershed management. Wine for Water will serve as both a celebration of these goals, and as a fundraiser for the Sustainable Midlands Adopt-A-Stream initiative that tests and monitors watersheds for contaminants.
Wine for Water will feature food from six local restaurants, wines from around the world and a Silent Auction with great deals on lots of fun items from local and national brands. If want to help strengthen our community, provide a healthy environment and promote a stronger local economy, you should attend Wine for Water. If you would like to contribute items to the Silent Auction, email email@example.com, and if you would like to volunteer at the event or with Sustainable Midlands’ other projects, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
